A Ballast Case Study on Precious Metals

Everybody has a different relationship with money.

The way we handle money and invest is influenced by our personal goals, preferences, risk appetite and individual circumstances. It also depends on the state of the world around us, as certain assets have historically risen in demand in times of high inflation, war or global instability.

While shares and managed investments may be right for some investors, there are many different types of assets that can make up someone’s portfolio; which is precisely why personal advice is valuable. A good financial planner should not only assist you by applying their expertise, but by helping you create a personal strategy that works with your preferences.

The Situation

For one couple, in their 50s to 60s, their preference was to have a diversified portfolio - but also to invest in something they could physically see and hold.

Upon being referred to Ballast Group, they discussed their plans and long-term goals with our financial planning team who helped them create a strategy they could have confidence in.

The Plan

Using Ballast Financial Planning and Ballast Superannuation Management, they established their Self-Managed Super Fund (SMSF).

This strategy enabled them to have greater control over their investments and choose assets that aren’t normally available in a regular industry or retail fund. As a part of their investment strategy, they allocated funds to diamonds, silver and gold.

The Results

In over a decade, each asset has shown significant growth.

The diamonds were purchased for between $30K - $40K and grew in value by $30,000, which was an increase of over 70% in over a decade. The silver was purchased for a similar amount and experienced similar growth of over 70% in the same timeframe. As for the gold, it was purchased for just under $3K and so far has grown in value by 230%.

At Ballast, our job is to listen to our client’s goals and priorities and provide them with a strategy they are confident in. As in this case study, we want to help our clients not only grow their portfolio but feel secure in their financial plan as they move towards achieving their financial future.

Financial advice doesn’t have to be complicated. Get in touch today to discuss your goals and create your financial strategy.
